Match a Print competition

1 Overview

This is an annual fun club competition to be taken humorously and where heckling of the judge’s decision is allowed as the judging is often likely to be highly subjective!.

For the benefit of newer members or those who have not attended this event in recent years, for one reason or another, the competition is run on the following basis.

  1. Members are split into two teams - Ladies and Gentlemen and to keep the team numbers equal some members may need to change genders for the evening and join the other team.
  2. Each team pools its photos - 40 per team and places them on easels positioned so that each team is only able to see its own selection of images. NO PEEPING by the opposing team is allowed!
  3. Ladies are the first team to start the first round and places one of their pictures on the light box.
  4. The Gentlemen then choose one of their own images considered a match on some ground or other (e.g., by type of subject, or theme, or composition etc) and places it alongside the Ladies first image on the light box.
  5. If the judge considers a match to have been made successfully, that team gets a point. If there is not a match, the point goes to the team which put up the first photo for that round.
  6. The judge also decides which of the two photos in each round is the better in his/her opinion. An additional point goes to the team awarded best image, in other words, in any given round a team may score 2 or 1 or 0 points.
  7. In all subsequent rounds the teams alternate in placing their image first which the second team tries to match.

It may sound a little complicated but in practice it is very simple.

Each member is asked to bring along at least six pictures to the event, preferably choosing ones which might be considered quite difficult to match but which at the same time are also of decent quality. These will be used by each team when making the final selection of their 40 entries for the competition.
